Ahead of 2026 Commonwealth Games billed for Glasgow, United Kingdom, the Federal Government has dangled a whopping N3.9 million ($3,000), N2.6 million ($2000), and N1.95 million ($1,500) at athletes representing Nigeria who will win gold, silver, bronze medals respectively at the Games.
Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Bukola Olopade, made the disclosure at the unveiling of the Games Hosting Right in Abuja on Friday.
The Director General also brought the message of hope to the athletes preparing for the Games, announcing the the Federal Government has also made funds available to pay for their camp allowances.
Equally disclosing that the athletes’ coaches will also smile to the bank with N6.5 million ($5000), the DG said; “Let me also inform you that decision has been taken on the reward package for the athetes. While the gold metallists will get $3000, the Silver medallists will get $2000 and we will pay the Bronze medalists $1,500.”
“Another good news is that we have equally started paying the athletes at various camps across the globe their camp allowances. We want to ensure that they are in winner mood for the games.” he announced.

The DG also spoke about the partnership with broadcast company to ensure Nigerians enjoy comprehensive free-to-air coverage of the Glasgow Games,
“Recognising the importance of bringing the Games into every Nigerian home, the NSC has partnered with The What Network to deliver free-to-air coverage of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.”
“Through this collaboration, every Nigerian will be able to follow Team Nigeria’s journey live and free, celebrating the dedication of our athletes and inspiring the next generation of sporting champions,” he said.
On his part, Chairman NSC, Shehu Dikko, said that the Federal Government has assured that fund will not be a challenge to the Games.
The initiative underscores the Commission’s commitment to making major international sporting events accessible to all Nigerians while strengthening support for Team Nigeria as the nation’s athletes compete on one of the world’s biggest multi-sport stages.
Nigeria is expected to be represented by some of its leading athletes, including world record holder Tobi Amusan, sprint star Kayinsola Ajayi, shot put standout Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, para l-weightlifting star, Folashade Oluwafemiayo and several other elite athletes competing across athletics, boxing, cycling, swimming, weightlifting and para sports.
