Nigeria opened Day 6 of the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow with strong results, punching a men’s shot put final ticket and sending three sprinters through to the 200m semifinals as the team’s medal push continued.
Reigning Commonwealth and African champion Chukwuebuka Enekwechi needed just one attempt to secure his spot in the men’s shot put final, launching an opening throw of 20.03 metres — well clear of the automatic qualifying standard. The result cements his place among the favourites for a medal.
Making her first appearance at a Commonwealth Games, Jennifer Obi Chukwuka won her women’s 200m heat in a personal-best 23.26 seconds (+1.4), finishing ahead of Canada’s Marie-Eloise Leclair (23.50) to advance automatically.

Olayinka Olajide also booked her semifinal spot, placing third in her heat in 23.62 seconds (+0.8), behind heat winner Lavanya Williams (22.91) and runner-up Veronica Pereira (23.00).
Udodi Onwuzurike delivered one of the morning’s standout runs, taking Heat Five in 20.31 seconds despite a +2.4 m/s tailwind, ahead of Shamar Horatio (20.83) and Lamin Camara (21.19).
It was a tougher outing for Alaba Akintola, who was eliminated after finishing third in Heat Two in 20.96 seconds, behind Zambia’s Zablon Ekwam (20.42) and Wanyae Belle (20.79).
