By all indications, the appointment of Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi as Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN) has proven to be one of the most fitting decisions of the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Since assuming office on October 24, 2023, Dr. Abdullahi has brought vision, technical expertise and uncommon energy to Nigeria’s renewable energy drive, positioning the ECN as a key player in the nation’s quest for sustainable power.

A native of Okene in Kogi State, born in Kano, Abdullahi combines academic excellence with extensive professional experience. A Chartered Engineer and member of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, he holds degrees from Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, University of Salford and a postdoctoral fellowship from the University of Manchester.

Before his appointment, he served in key positions at the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, National Space Research and Development Agency and as Senior Technical Adviser to the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology.

Solarising Nigeria
At the heart of Abdullahi’s leadership is a determination to make renewable energy accessible to ordinary Nigerians.

Under his stewardship, the ECN has driven the implementation of the Renewed Hope Solarization Project, a flagship initiative designed to provide 2MW solar hybrid power systems to federal universities and tertiary hospitals across the country.

The results have been significant. More than 100MW of solar power has already been delivered, bringing cleaner and more reliable electricity to campuses, hospitals and surrounding communities.

His target of achieving full renewable energy coverage for federal tertiary institutions by 2027 reflects a leadership focused on measurable outcomes rather than lofty promises.

Building Nigeria’s Solar Industry
Perhaps Abdullahi’s most ambitious intervention is his push to transform Nigeria from a consumer of solar technology into a producer.

This vision gained momentum with the groundbreaking of a Solar Photovoltaic Modules Assembly Plant in Enugu State, a project expected to reduce dependence on imported solar panels, conserve foreign exchange and stimulate local manufacturing.

The ECN has also forged strategic partnerships with international investors, including LONGi Green Energy Technology Co. Ltd., aimed at establishing a 500MW to 1,000MW solar panel production facility in Nigeria.

If achieved, the project could create thousands of jobs and position Nigeria as a leading renewable-energy hub in Africa.

From Research to Impact
Abdullahi has equally revitalised the Commission’s research centres across the six geopolitical zones, ensuring that innovation translates into practical solutions.

From solar-powered agricultural equipment to bio-energy technologies and community-based renewable energy projects, the focus has shifted from theory to real-life impact.

His collaboration with regional partners to strengthen Nigeria’s energy data systems and the rollout of renewable energy empowerment programmes in rural communities further underscore his commitment to inclusive development.

A Lasting Legacy
One of the landmark achievements of his tenure is the unveiling of the National Energy Policy and National Energy Master Plan, providing Nigeria with a comprehensive roadmap for sustainable energy development.

These frameworks are expected to guide policy decisions and investments in the sector for years to come.

The Right Man for the Job
At a time when public institutions are often criticised for underperformance, Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi has emerged as a shining example of what can happen when competence meets opportunity.

His tenure at the ECN demonstrates that with the right leadership, Nigeria’s energy transition is not merely an aspiration but an achievable reality.

As the country continues its search for lasting solutions to its power challenges, one thing is increasingly clear: Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi is proving that when a round peg is placed in a round hole, progress is inevitable.
