Assemblies of God Church on Saturday, August 26, 2023, dedicated a new edifice in Agboju -Amuwo, Lagos, with a call on Nigerians to seek the face of God.
The dedication ceremony presided over by the retired Apapa District Superintendent, Michael Ogunbola, was a grand affair attended by many of its members and dignitaries from across the state.
The newly completed church at Old Ojo Road in Agboju Amuwo is a magnificent three-storey building that can accommodate up to 2,000 congregants at once. It was built with a view to having a suitable place for worship.
The senior pastor in-charge and the presbyter, Apapa District, Rev. Dr. Kalu Oboh-Offor, highlighted the importance of the church in the social and economic fabric of Nigeria.
He said Church is key to Nigeria’s survival, emphasizing the role the church played in nation building. “If the church was not in Nigeria doing what it is doing; serving as the light of the world and as salt of the earth, the degradation would have been more than we can imagine.
“A large per cent of the country’s population is the youth. You can’t allow that kind of generation to be wasted. The church is a place where they can find hope, direction and purpose.
“The degradation would have been massive if we remove the church from Nigeria. Without the Church, many young men and women would have been lost. .
“As a nation, we are grappling with various challenges that threaten its very existence. From economic instability to political turmoil and security threats, the country has a long list of problems to address.
“In such chaotic times, the role of the Church becomes crucial in supporting and guiding the people towards a brighter future. The church plays an integral part in Nigeria’s survival, bringing hope, unity and solace to its citizens.
“Also, the church provides a beacon of hope to Nigerians who are often disheartened by the numerous obstacles they face. Economic struggles, high unemployment rates, and poverty have plagued the country for decades.
“In times of despair, the Church stands as a source of hope, inspiring its members to hold onto their faith and believe in a better tomorrow. Through sermons, teachings and various outreach programmes, churches instill in their congregations a sense of perseverance and faith that can help overcome even the most challenging circumstances.
“Moreover, the Church serves as a unifying force in a country that is deeply divided along various lines, such as ethnicity, religion and class. Nigeria is home to over 250 ethnic groups, each with its own unique culture and traditions. Often, this diversity leads to conflicts and divisions. “However, the Church has the ability to bridge these gaps and create a sense of unity among Nigerians. Regardless of their differences, individuals can come together within the walls of a church, united by a shared love for God and their fellow human beings. The Church encourages inclusivity, fostering a spirit of acceptance and tolerance that is vital for the country’s peaceful coexistence.
“Furthermore, the Church plays an essential role in providing social services to Nigerians who are neglected by the government. Unfortunately, many Nigerians lack access to basic necessities such as healthcare, education and clean water.
“In response to this, churches have taken the lead in offering services to those in need. They establish medical clinics, schools and water projects in marginalised communities, ensuring that the most vulnerable individuals have a chance at a better life. The church’s commitment to social justice and the well-being of its members demonstrates its dedication to Nigeria’s survival,” he said.
The cleric stated that part of the impact the church has done for their host community was to transform the dilapidated site with so much resistance from touts.
“Additionally, the Church encourages moral values, promoting integrity, honesty and ethical behaviour among its members. Nigeria has been plagued by corruption, which has crippled its development and tarnished its global reputation.
“In this context, the Church serves as a moral compass, reminding Nigerian citizens of the importance of virtue, transparency and accountability. The Church not only preaches these principles but also actively promotes them through community outreach programmes and initiatives. By instilling strong moral values, the Church contributes to the eradication of corruption and ensures a brighter future for Nigeria.
“However, the Church occupies a central position in Nigeria’s survival. It provides hope in times of despair, fosters unity and inclusivity, supports marginalised communities and promotes moral values. As Nigeria continues to face various challenges, the church’s role becomes ever more critical. By recognizing its significance and supporting the Church in its endeavors, Nigeria can pave the way for a brighter future for its citizens.”
The cleric said the desire of the Church is for the nation to prosper and for Nigerians to enjoy prosperity, even as he urged government to put policies in place to harness the potentials of youths.
Offor further said: “We have a youth bulge. A large per cent of our population is youths and we can’t allow this huge number to waste. Nigerian youths are doing great things around the world. And if they are given the opportunity, they will transform the country.”
He cited the case of a young man who served his master and after his apprenticeship, he was settled with N3000. “The young man reached out to me and I instructed him not to add any money with what he was given by his master. I prayed for him. Today, God has blessed him beyond measures.”
Earlier, in a sermon, Offor told the congregation that if they wanted their joy to be full, they should dwell in the house of God, adding that the house of God is a place for healing, deliverance and restoration.
“It is with heart full of gratitude to God for the grace to accomplish this feat. While praying, contemplating and planning on the best possible ways to approach the work and settling an outstanding debt of N6.8m, COVID -19 struck, shutting down financial means of livelihood.
“But God, who can solve all problems, gave me the understanding to rally members to continue the work, despite the uncertain economic situations confronting the whole world.”
