The Ogun State government has recorded 25 suspected cholera cases in seven local government areas (LGAs), according to the Commissioner for Health, Dr Tomi Coker.
The affected LGAs are Ado-Odo/Ota, Remo North, Odeda, Sagamu, Ijebu North, Ewekoro, and Obafemi Owode.
Coker identified six high-risk LGAs for cholera outbreaks: Abeokuta South, Abeokuta North, Ijebu North, Obafemi Owode, Ifo, and Ado-Odo/Ota.
She attributed the spread of the disease to the movement of people between Ogun and Lagos, which is experiencing a cholera outbreak.
The first two cases were reported on June 12, 2024, with a travel history to Lagos and consumption of tiger nut drinks. Five contacts with travel history to Lagos also tested positive.

As of the press conference, there were nine confirmed cases and one death, prompting the declaration of a cholera outbreak in Ogun State.
Coker emphasized the state’s preparedness, including a robust surveillance system, trained rapid-response teams, and prepositioned medications. Treatment for cholera is free in all government facilities.
She urged the public to practice proper hygiene, drink clean water, cook food thoroughly, and seek immediate medical attention for watery stool symptoms.
The Ministry of Environment has constructed 60 public toilets in communities lacking facilities to prevent cholera outbreaks.
