Cholera: Benue records 16 suspected cases, 4 deaths

From Scholastica Hir, Makurdi

The Benue State government has recorded 16 suspected cases of cholera in the state.

The state epidemiologist, Dr Henry Ijabo, disclosed this while speaking to newsmen in Makurdi on Thursday.

Ijabo said the 16 suspected cases of cholera were recorded in 2024 in three local government areas of the state, including Agatu, Otukpo, and Ado.

He explained that out of the 16 suspected cases, four deaths have so far been recorded.

“They were not confirmed yet. The four died while we were still investigating. We had one suspected case in Agatu LGA some months ago, but we recorded one suspected case in Otukpo LGA and another nine in Ado,” he said.

The state epidemiologist said the Ministry of Health is collaborating with the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) and other agencies to cover the entire state, including IDP camps.

While noting that cholera management is mainly rehydration, Ijabo said the state government is supporting health facilities with IV fluids, antibiotics, and other requirements for case management, especially in hotspot areas where suspected cases are being recorded.
