CBN raises alarm on fraudulent emails targeting bank customers

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has raised the alarm over the circulation of fraudulent emails, messages and online communications aimed at deceiving bank customers and compromising their personal information.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the apex bank warned that the fake messages are designed to appear as if they originate from the CBN, often containing misleading claims about the Bank’s leadership, licensing processes and policy directives.

The statement, signed by the Acting Director of Corporate Communications, Hakama Sidi-Ali, noted that the fraudulent communications typically prompt recipients to click on suspicious links or disclose sensitive personal and financial information, thereby exposing them to cyber attacks.

“The Central Bank of Nigeria wishes to alert members of the public to the circulation of fraudulent messages, emails and online communications purporting to originate from or be associated with the Bank,” the statement read.

The Bank advised Nigerians to refrain from clicking on unverified links or sharing confidential information on suspicious platforms, stressing that such actions could lead to unauthorized access to personal accounts. It further urged the public to verify all CBN-related communications through its official website and recognised media channels, while encouraging victims or concerned individuals to report suspected fraud cases to law enforcement authorities.

The apex bank reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the nation’s financial system, adding that it is continuously strengthening its cybersecurity frameworks in collaboration with relevant agencies to curb digital fraud and protect the public.

The warning comes amid growing concerns over cybercrime in the country, with fraudsters increasingly deploying sophisticated tactics to exploit unsuspecting individuals.
