CBN Pensioners Club cautions against misrepresentation

Leadership of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Pensioners Club has disowned a media publication credited to certain individuals who claimed to be speaking on behalf of CBN pensioners on issues relating to the Federal Government’s intervention in the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) dispute and the harmonisation policy.

In a statement issued in Abuja, the club said the publication was unauthorised, misleading, and did not emanate from its duly elected executive committee.

The disclaimer jointly signed by the club’s National President, Mr. Patrick I. C. Anene, and the General Secretary, Mr. Jiya D. Tsado, said publication was designed to influence President Bola Tinubu into compelling the management of the CBN to grant certain individuals what they described as their perceived entitlements under the harmonisation policy.

Anene stressed that the action was carried out without their knowledge, consent, or approval. “The publication did not originate from the Executive Committee of the Central Bank of Nigeria Pensioners Club, nor was it authorised, endorsed, or ratified by the leadership at any time.”

Anene further clarified that the individuals named as authors of the controversial publication—David Edogiawerie and Samuel Ehigie Isokpunwa—are not members of the Executive Committee of the club and do not hold any official mandate to speak or act on its behalf.

“They lack the authority to issue statements, make representations, or engage in public advocacy on behalf of the club or its members on matters of policy, negotiation, or engagement with the management of the Central Bank of Nigeria,” Anene added.

The club emphasised that the views expressed in the publication are strictly personal and should not be construed, directly or indirectly, as reflecting the position of the CBN Pensioners Club or its accredited leadership.

For clarity, the leadership of the club drew a clear distinction between the agitation of ASUU, which it described as an academic and sector-specific labour issue, and the agitation by the said individuals on the harmonisation policy, which it noted is purely a pension-related matter. It warned against attempts to conflate unrelated issues in a manner that could mislead the public and policymakers.

The statement also reaffirmed that the club operates through established and recognised channels of communication, stressing that any official position or statement can only be issued by the Executive Committee or persons expressly authorised to do so.

Consequently, the leadership urged the management of the Central Bank of Nigeria, government institutions, the general public, and media organisations to completely disregard the said publication, noting that it does not represent the collective will, position, or authority of the CBN Pensioners Club.

Reiterating its commitment to lawful engagement, orderly dialogue, and respect for institutional processes, the club said it remains focused on constructive engagement through appropriate channels. It also dissociated itself entirely from any unauthorised actions or publications that misrepresent its position or undermine its integrity.

“This disclaimer is issued in the interest of clarity, accountability, and the preservation of the integrity, unity, and credibility of the Central Bank of Nigeria Pensioners Club,” the leadership concluded.
