The Consortium for Advanced Research Training in Africa (CARTA) recently organised a three-day training session for PhD supervisors. The aim of the training was to enhance the quality and efficiency of supervision in the doctoral research process. CARTA, a partnership between African universities and research institutes, focuses on building research capacity in African higher educational institutions.
Prof Akinyinka Omigbodun, the Focal Person for CARTA, explained that the workshop was part of a new initiative called the Doctoral Academy, which aims to strengthen doctoral training at the University of Ibadan. The training was designed to equip supervisors with the necessary skills to effectively guide and motivate students through their Ph.D. programs.
Omigbodun emphasised the importance of well-trained supervisors in ensuring that students complete their Ph.D. programs within the recommended timeframe. Currently, many students are taking longer than expected to finish their studies, which is not desirable. By providing supervisors with proper training, the Doctoral Academy hopes to improve the completion rates of doctoral students.
The Provost of UI PG College, Prof. Ayo Ogunjuyigbe, reiterated the importance of the training in preventing students from getting stuck in their research work. He emphasised the goal of producing outstanding researchers and replicating the success of the University of Ibadan across the country.
Overall, the training organised by CARTA and the Doctoral Academy aims to improve the research capacity of African institutions and ensure that doctoral students are adequately supported throughout their programs. By strengthening supervision and providing supervisors with the necessary skills, more students will be able to complete their Ph.D. studies on time and contribute to the research community.
