A youth senator from Cameroon’s Manyu Division, Manghe Romeo Etta, has filed a suit against the Nigeria Police, alleging fundamental rights violations and demanding N200million in damages.

The suit, which is marked   No. HC/146F/ 2025,  has been  adjourned   to February 10, 2026, for hearing.

Etta said his ordeal began after purchasing a BMW X1 from a dealer in Ikom, Cross River State. Despite completing registration and ownership transfer, police impounded the vehicle, accusing it of being stolen.

Etta said he presented documents proving ownership, but the police alleged the vehicle was stolen and refused to release it.

“I was confronted with embarrassing allegation of buying a stolen car.

“The police demanded the particulars of the vehicle and I tendered the particulars to them, yet they refused to hand over the particulars of the vehicle or release my vehicle back to me,” he said.

The incident occurred in Ikom Local Government Area of Cross River State and was transferred from the Ikom Divisional Police Command to Calabar.

He claimed that he was detained for about 12 hours in an uninhabitable environment, where he reportedly vomited repeatedly, and was forced to pay N150,000 for bail. He also alleged that the police refused to release the car’s documents.

The lawmaker’s lawyer, Armstrong Takim Achu of Armstrong T. Achu & Co chambers in Calabar, said the suit seeks compensation for the rights abuse, noting the court is the last hope of the common man.
