The imprisoned opposition leader in Cameroon, Maurice Kamto, has challenged the legality of his trial before a military court on charges of insurrection, a crime punishable with the death penalty.
Kamto disputed the outcome of last year’s election, which was won by President Paul Biya. He has called several protests and the authorities accuse him of being behind recent attacks on Cameroonian embassies in Europe.
Kamto says that, as a civilian, he and dozens of his supporters should not be on trial at a military court. The hearing was postponed until next week to allow a decision to be made on the legality of the trial.
