The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has outlined key steps newly naturalised Americans should take after obtaining citizenship, including updating official records, securing citizenship documents and accessing rights available to them.
The guidance highlights practical actions new citizens can take to fully establish their status and take advantage of opportunities that come with US citizenship.
Here are eight important things newly naturalised Americans should consider:
1. Apply for a US passport
New citizens can apply for a US passport through the US Department of State. The passport serves as official evidence of US citizenship and can be used for international travel alongside the Certificate of Naturalisation.
2. Update Social Security records
Newly naturalised citizens should update their citizenship information with the Social Security Administration. This ensures their records accurately reflect their new status.
3. Sponsor eligible family members
Naturalised citizens may petition for certain eligible relatives to obtain lawful permanent residence, commonly known as a Green Card. Applicants must satisfy the applicable immigration and financial requirements.
4. Obtain citizenship documents for eligible children
In some circumstances, a child may automatically acquire US citizenship after a parent becomes a naturalised citizen. Eligible parents can apply for a Certificate of Citizenship to formally document the child’s status.
5. Register to vote
US citizens can register to vote through the appropriate state or federal channels. USCIS identifies voting as both a right and responsibility associated with American citizenship.
6. Replace a lost Certificate of Naturalisation
Citizens who lose, damage or need to replace their Certificate of Naturalisation can apply for a replacement through USCIS by filing Form N-565.
7. Update driver’s licence or state identification records
New citizens who have changed their name or address should update their driver’s licence or state identification records with the relevant state Department of Motor Vehicles.
8. Explore business and entrepreneurship opportunities
New Americans can also explore support offered by the US Small Business Administration. Available resources may include business counselling, access to financing and opportunities to compete for government contracts.
The USCIS guidance is designed to help newly naturalised citizens understand some of the practical steps available to them after becoming Americans. It also highlights ways citizens can make use of their new rights, responsibilities and opportunities.
