President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed deep sadness over the death of the First President of the Christian Council of Nigeria (now CAN), Rev. Luther Dabirong Cishak. He died at 88.
In a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, Buhari described Cishak as a man whose sacrifice for peace was on common and added that the late clergy was passionately devoted to the promotion of peaceful coexistence, tolerance, social harmony and mutual respect between Christians and Muslims in Plateau State and the country in general.
The president recalled that when, in 2003, crisis rocked the state, “Cishak risked his life in order to protect others from being killed by mobs,” and added that “this kind of sacrifice for peace is an uncommon virtue that must be extolled by all patriotic Nigerians. Buhari extended his condolences to the family of the deceased and the Christian Association of Nigeria over the death of the man he called “one of Nigeria’s finest and greatest religious leaders.”
In a related development, President Buhari has also mourned the death of popular Hausa actor, Kasimu Yero, who died after a protracted illness.
He described Yero as “one of the greatest, talented and most entertaining actors of our time.”
