Brickhall School, Abuja, has emerged overall best in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in the recently concluded African Mathematics Olympiad competition.
For the feat, the school was rewarded with cash gifts, gold medal for the primary six pupil, Lotachi Odo Amanda, who represented the school, and other recognition for the school and the mathematics teacher.
At the presentation of the awards to the school and the pupil, students and teachers of the school, including the executive director, Nneka Emodi-Eze, expressed their joy and appreciation to the pupil for representing the school well.
Emodi-Eze, who later presented the items to other students in a brief ceremony in the school, described Lotachi and others who have made the school proud in different engagements as great ambassadors of the school who have registered its name in book of victory.
She said: “This has brought joy to the entire school community. This is, undoubtedly, the evidence of extra work that both the students and teachers have put in place to better our students, academically and otherwise.
“In Brickhall School, we silently observe and identify the potential of all students because we believe every student is blessed with some form of talent. We give them unique attention and coaching to enable them confidently develop themselves along their different areas of interest. This was what we did in this case, and the result was positive and impressive. We hope to achieve more in coming editions of the competition and other ones.”
Miss Lotachi Odo Amanda, who represented the school in the competition, explained that the success was as a result of extra work, dedication, support and encouragement that came from her mathematics teacher and her fellow students.
She said: “My mathematics teacher was instrumental to the success. He created a conducieve and friendly environment for me to approach him with difficult mathematics questions, which, in most cases, he demystified.
“He created time for us to study and solve mathematics questions together. In fact, he’s always available for me at all times even when it’s inconvenient for him. I am grateful to him and the school management for the opportunity to represent them and achieve the feat.”
One of the schoolteachers who pleaded anonymity said the school had a culture of first creating a friendly atmosphere for the children to freely approach and interacts with teachers, and speak their mind.
“In Brickhall School, we play and learn together. And that’s why we are achieving results, as evident in the academic and non-academic engagements of our students,” the teacher said, with a promise to do more to ensure improved performance in the coming editions.
