Black Dreams Empire, a rising independent music label, is calling on African music executives and labels to collaborate more closely to take Afrobeats and Amapiano to the global stage.
With African artists gaining unprecedented recognition worldwide, including multiple nominations at prestigious awards like the Grammys, Black Dreams Empire believes now is the time for unity in the industry. “Nigerian and African artists are receiving the recognition they deserve, and this progress gives hope to emerging talents like our new signing, Mezzaya,” said the label’s founder, Daniel Onoriode German, also known as Engr D. “We believe one day he too could be up on that stage, not just being recognized but winning awards like the Grammys.”
However, according to Toks Asher Young, a representative of Black Dreams Empire, one of the biggest challenges facing independent and emerging artists is securing the funding and airplay needed to promote their work. “Even with sponsorship, getting consistent airplay on radio and TV can be a struggle,” Toks explained. “Established artists, even with mediocre songs, get more attention, while new artists barely get a chance. How can upcoming talent be discovered if the media doesn’t support them?”
He emphasized that giving new voices a platform is crucial for the growth of African music. “If media houses gave emerging acts a fair chance, we would see more fresh talent being discovered and heard.”
Mezzaya, Black Dreams Empire’s latest signee, echoed these sentiments as he prepares to release his debut EP, *Messiah*. “It takes determination and consistency to succeed,” he shared. “My forthcoming EP is a reflection of my life experiences, particularly my struggles before I got signed, and I hope it resonates with my fans and listeners.”
Black Dreams Empire, based in Cape Town, South Africa, was founded by Daniel Onoriode German, known as Engr D. The label is dedicated to nurturing African talent and amplifying their voices on the global stage.
