In its bid to uphold standards and ensure academic excellence in Benue State, the Director General, Benue State Education Quality Assurance Agency, (BEQA), Dr. Francis Terna, has directed school principals to refund excess West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and National Examinations Council (NECO) handling charges collected from students.

The BEQA DG stated this in Makurdi on during a routine monitoring visit of schools in the state.

The DG, who during the visit, sought firsthand information on the costs associated with WAEC and NECO registrations from the SS 111 students, said they must stick strictly to the approved handling charges of N5,000.

He however instructed principals, who collected more than the charges to refund the excess and to desist from putting excess burden on students and their parents.

Terna tasked schools to maintain a consistent and uninterrupted academic calendar, warning that on no account should a school admit an SS3 student during the second term.

The DG, who assured that the state government is committed to educational consistency, said it would continue to provide a stimulating and focused learning environment that enables students reach their full potentials.

Terna inspected the registers of form masters, scheme of work and record of work, as well as lesson notes.

He said: “This thorough evaluation underlines his dedication to quality control within the educational system to ensure that both teachers and students benefit from a well-structured and balanced curriculum.”

The DG cautioned those who may not have been diligent in their work to desist from such practices, emphasizing that failure to comply would result in appropriate penalties.

The four schools visited include RCM Primary School in Tionsha, UBE Junior Secondary School, Naka Road, NKST Secondary School, Naka Road and Mount Carmel College, Makurdi.
