At least 23 people were killed in fresh attacks by armed herdsmen and suspected Jukun-speaking militants across Guma, Logo, Ukum, and Kwande Local Government Areas (LGAs) of Benue State on May 9–10, 2025, prompting mass displacement.
Nine deaths were reported in Logo LGA, eight in Ukum, and three each in Guma and Kwande, with residents fleeing as attacks become near-daily occurrences.
Dr Ray Anumve, a Kwande native and founder of Dr Ray Anumve Foundation, told journalists in Makurdi on Saturday, May 10, 2025, that “coordinated brutal attacks” occurred on May 9 in Turan, Kwande LGA.
Armed Fulani herdsmen and suspected Jukun-speaking assailants, speaking Fulfulde and Jukun, targeted multiple locations. In Mbaav Clan, Mbadura Council Ward, near Tse Yande compound, Gusa crossing, River Katsina-Ala, farmer Mr Agwei was killed, with his brother and son injured. In Anwase, Mkomon Area, Mbaikyor Council Ward, Mr Iortsor was killed, and at Waya, Yaav Council Ward, a motorcyclist was shot, sustaining severe injuries. Both survivors are receiving treatment in Jato-Aka.
In Ukum LGA, an attack on Jootar on Saturday morning, May 10, claimed eight lives, including Jonathan Ordooga, Aondogu Torse, Cheater Torse, Yagba Torse, Tersugh Mbaaiiga, Terhemen Emmanuel, Henenshima Apirgwa, and Orfega Atuku, with more bodies being recovered.
In Guma LGA, Mr Paul reported heightened tension in Yelewata, Nyiev Council Ward, after a youth was macheted on May 8, allegedly by militias from Nasarawa State planning further attacks.
The victim is hospitalised in Makurdi. Another Guma resident confirmed attacks on May 9 in Ukpiam, Mababai Ward, killing three, and on May 10 in Umenger, Mbadwem Council Ward, with casualty details pending.
Residents lamented the displacement during farming season, with security forces struggling to repel attackers. The Defence Headquarters recently attributed such violence to foreign herders, escalating concerns over regional security.
