Bells Comprehensive School, Ota, Ogun State has emerged winner of the 10th edition of Winifred Awosika Foundation Annual Schools Challenge quiz competition.
The first stage of the competition, written test involved eight schools and two were eliminated. The second stage quiz, involved six schools and questions were from Mathematics, Science and General Studies.
The Ota school defeated seven other secondary schools with 30 points to cart home the first prize. The two representatives of the school, Musa Ziyad and Daniel Kunle were presented with plagues and the star prize.
The second and third positions went to Crescent International Secondary School, Ota, with 26 points and Grace High School, Gbagada, 25 points.
Six other secondary schools received consolation prizes of for participating in the quiz competition with theme: “Promoting Academic Challenge”.
Zigad, one of the Bells School competitors told Daily Sun that he and Kunle came prepared to win the competition, “We are excited going back to school with the star prize.”
Zigad, who obtained 4Ax and 2A in the just released IGCSE, said he had participated in some competition but the annual schools challenge is the outstanding one.
He told Daily Sun that he intend to study Computer Engineering at IMT and hope to do well in the May/June 2024 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE)
Mrs. Sam-Akpologun Olubunmi, a teacher with Grace School, Gbagada, said the science teachers prepared the students for the competition and that she is pleased with the 3rd position.
“We looked forward to winning the competition. The 3rd position is an encouragement for us to do well next in competition. Grace School participated in the Annual Schools Challenge last year. I am happy we placed 3rd position.”
In his remarks, a member of the foundation, Mr. Segun Ogunsola said the proprietress, Dr. (Mrs.) Winifred Awosika started the school in 1977 with five pupils in her boys quarters
Ogunsola, who is also the Executive Head of Schools (academics) explained that from one school in 1977, she now has seven secondary schools across the country, A Level College and a university at Abeokuta.
According to him, the proprietress established the foundation to promote academic excellence among schools through the annual schools challenge. Ogunsola explained that the quiz competition is for other private secondary school students while Chrisland students had their separate competition last week.
The guest speaker, Mr. Sofola Bisi from the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) appreciated Dr. Winifred Awosika for establishing schools to provide quality education to young Nigerians.
Bisi, who spoke on ‘Hard Work’, tasked the students from different schools to work hard to achieve success, reminding them that “hard work pays”.
“When your mates are going to party, go to a corner and read your books. Your must pay attention to details in the classroom and always listen to your teachers.”
He reminded the students that to achieve excellence in life, they must work hard to attain better result, adding, “hard work is to key to success. You must remain committed, discipline and dedicated in what you do.”
Bisi advised the students to use the internet to search for good and educative materials and urged them to remain focused and self motivated.
The speaker tasked the students to shun examination malpractice and advised them to use approved WAEC syllabus for the May/June WASSCE.
The winners were presented with plagues and the star prizes for the different positions and consolations were given to other schools for their participation.
