FC Barcelona are recalibrating their transfer strategy ahead of the summer window, with renewed focus on Victor Osimhen after hitting a wall in their pursuit of Julián Álvarez.
The Catalan side had initially prioritised Álvarez as a long-term replacement for Robert Lewandowski, but Atlético Madrid’s firm stance on retaining the Argentine forward has significantly complicated negotiations.
Atlético are understood to value Álvarez as high as €200m, a figure that would place him among the most expensive transfers in football history, and well beyond Barcelona’s current financial reach.
“The main issue is that Barcelona will struggle to spend as heavily as they have previously on a single position, given their ongoing financial difficulties.”
“Furthermore, they have several areas to strengthen during the summer transfer window, meaning their funds must be spread across the squad.”

Barcelona are reportedly considering a player-plus-cash structure to reduce immediate financial pressure, but such an approach is unlikely to appeal to Atlético, who are under no urgency to sell following improved financial stability.
“Nevertheless, Barcelona are prepared to move for Álvarez by offering a player-plus-cash deal to reduce the immediate financial outlay, although this is unlikely to appeal to Atlético.”
With talks stalling, attention has now shifted to Osimhen, who is seen as a more realistic option at an estimated €75m significantly lower than Atlético’s demands for Álvarez.
“If Atleti continue to take a hard-line stance, which is expected, it would make sense for Barcelona to explore alternatives. Victor Osimhen is one of the players under consideration, and he is viewed as a more attainable option than the 2022 World Cup winner.”
