Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has charged the President Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government to immediately release former Kaduna governor, Nasir El-Rufai and other political detainees.

Atiku, who returned from lesser Hajj on Saturday, made the demand after paying a solidarity visit to former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami SAN in Abuja.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain shared photos of the visit on X on Monday.

El-Rufai has been in the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) since February 19 over allegations of money laundering, abuse of office, and fraud during his time in office.

He is also linked to a separate investigation by the Department of State Services (DSS) regarding allegations of telephone interception involving national security.

Malami, who is out on bail, is being prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) along with his wife and son over money laundering charges.

The opposition has tagged their ordeals a “political witch-hunt”.

Atiku maintained that no one should be detained simply because they do not share the same ideology or political platform with the government of the day.

He said, “Following my return to the country on Saturday night from Umrah (lesser Hajj), I led a delegation on a solidarity visit to the former Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, SAN.

“I wish to serve notice to the authorities detaining former Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, and all other political detainees to release them henceforth.

“No one should be detained simply because they do not share the same ideology or political platform with the government of the day.”
