After months of waiting, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State on Tuesday forwarded names of three commissioner nominees to the state House of Assembly for screening and possible confirmation as members of the state executive council.
This is coming few days that his election was affirmed by the Supreme Court.
Three ministries including information, justice and local government affairs had been without commissioners since the commencement of the new administration.
Contained in the forwarded list to the House were the state publicity secretary of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Ifeanyi Osuoza; lead counsel of the PDP in the protracted governorship election legal battle, Ekemenrejo Ohwovoriole; and Kalanama Penawour.
In the letter read during plenary by the Speaker of the House, Emomotimi Guwor, the governor said the appointment was in exercise of the powers conferred on him by Section 192 (2) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, (1999) as Amended).
Oborevwori said the nomination for the appointments was “in order to strengthen our resolve to deliver on the MORE Agenda of my administration.”
Emomotimi Guwor, who welcomed members of the Assembly back to plenary from the Christmas and New year break, congratulated Governor Oborevwori, “on his resounding victory at the Supreme Court, on Friday, 19th January, 2024.
“The decision of the Supreme Court is a re-affirmation of the landslide victory of His Excellency the Governor at the Governorship election on 18th March, 2023. The victory is for all Deltans, democracy and the rule of law.
“The decision by the apex Court is res judicata (it is final). I therefore call on all Deltans to join hands with His Excellency the Governor to advance Delta State with his MORE Agenda. Let us elevate the overall interest of developing the State above individual myopic interests.”
The Speaker lamented that Nigeria was s in a critical economic quagmire, saying that “Our people are daily facing hardship never experienced in our corporate existence.
“I therefore urge all of us to continue to show love to our constituents in our little ways. I thank Members for reaching out to the people during the yuletide. God bless you.”
Reiterating the commitment of members of the House to deliver on their constitutional mandate of law making, representation and oversight, Guwor said: “we shall hold a retreat before the end of the month to articulate and draw up a Legislative Agenda for the 8th Assembly.
