The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnic (ASUP) has refused to reopen the Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, despite the directive of the state government.
The ASUP chairman of the polytechnic, Fatai Afolabi, said the union will meet on Wednesday to discuss the way forward while the school will remain shut.
The polytechnic was shut following a protest that greeted the suspension of the rector, Dr Tajudeen Odetayo, and subsequent replacement by Alabi Adeyemi whom the union said did not qualify but was made acting rector because he hailed from Ede, the hometown of governor Ademola Adeleke.
While the effort to resolve the crisis was on, the exam coordinator, A. O. Adewoyin, issued a memo directing the student to resume the continuation of the suspended examination.
The memo dated August 11, stated that the 2022/2023 first semester examination for part-time students will start on Tuesday 15th August 2023, and end on Wednesday, 23rd August 2023 (day 7 to day 14) as per the examination timetable.
The deputy governor, Kola Adewusi had promised the students during a protest that the school would be opened on Monday.
Also, the education commissioner, Dipo Eluwole, had urged the union to return to school pending the outcome of the investigation of the committee set up by the government.
The ASUP had told the government to reinstate Odetayo and follow due process even if there is any allegation against him.
