Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar said the attack on the African Democratic Congress (ADC) office in Ubima community, Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State is an assault on democracy.
Atiku stated this in a statement he personally signed which was shared on Facebook.
On Friday, former Minister of Transportation and ADC chieftain, Rotimi Amaechi’s convoy was reportedly attacked by thugs on the road between Ubima and Omuanwa in Ikwerre LGA.
The same thugs also set ablaze the ward office of the ADC in Ubima, Amaechi’s hometown, on Thursday night.
Similar attacks were carried out against some ADC chieftains, including Peter Obi and Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, in Benin City, Edo State last week.
Atiku warned that attacks on the opposition portend grave danger for the nation’s democracy.
He said, “The attack on the African Democratic Congress (ADC) office in Ubima, Ikwere Local Government Area of Rivers State, is condemned.
“It is a dangerous development that efforts to weaken the opposition have now shifted to attacking its members and destroying its properties.
“These are not merely attacks on the opposition coalition ADC, but an assault on our democracy.”
The ADC chieftain emphasised that the protection of the lives and properties of the opposition must, as a priority, be guaranteed by the Tinubu-led All Progressives Congress (ADC) administration.
“That is the minimum expectation of Nigerians.
“We call for an independent investigation into the torching of the ADC secretariat in Rivers to ensure that those responsible are prosecuted in accordance with the law.
“Failure to do so may encourage others to inflict further violence on the lives and properties of the opposition.
“Meanwhile, we are still awaiting the outcome of the investigation into the attack on Mr. Peter Obi and other ADC leaders last week in Benin, Edo State,” Atiku stated.
