Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP) in the 2023 elections, Peter Obi, has called on Nigerians to remain resolute in the face of growing insecurity and lawlessness across the country, urging citizens to elect leaders defined by competence, character and compassion.
Writing on his verified X handle, he noted that while experiences of lawlessness were not new to him, the current situation in the country demands that men and women of goodwill step forward with a sense of responsibility rather than fear.
Reacting to the attack on him in Edo state on Tuesday, he noted that violence and insecurity in Anambra State had shaped his determination years ago to seek the governorship of the state, convinced that leadership must restore order, security and public trust.
He made the remarks while expressing gratitude to Nigerians at home and in the diaspora for their prayers, calls and solidarity following an incident at the ADC office in Benin, Edo State, saying that he was profoundly grateful for the outpouring of support, particularly during what he described as a difficult period for the family of the distinguished elder statesman and former Governor of Edo State, Chief John Oyegun, who has served Nigeria honourably in various capacities.
He also acknowledged support for another former governor of the state, Professor Oserheimen Osunbor.

According to him, the solidarity shown by Nigerians had strengthened his faith in the nation’s shared humanity and collective hope for a better future. He added that the encouragement received had further deepened his commitment to continue serving and contributing to nation-building.
Obi also stressed that the current challenges confronting Nigeria should serve as a wake-up call for citizens to take active interest in governance. Citing the philosopher, Plato, he reminded Nigerians that the price good people pay for refusing to participate in government is to live under the rule of bad people.
He, therefore, urged Nigerians to be deliberate and discerning in choosing their leaders, emphasising the need to prioritise competence, commitment, character and compassion in leadership selection.
“This moment urges Nigerians to be even more resolute in electing leaders who prioritise the nation above self and service above power,” he said.
He expressed optimism that with courage, unity and a shared sense of responsibility, Nigerians can build a peaceful, secure and prosperous country that meets the aspirations of its people.
The former governor concluded by reaffirming his renewed commitment to work alongside other well-meaning citizens in advancing national progress and restoring public trust in governance.
