The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has challenged political leaders in Nigeria to pause, reflect, and think carefully about the direction of the country and the role each of them must play in shaping it.

This was contained in a message by the CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, to Christians in Nigeria on the occasion of Ash Wednesday which marks the beginning of the 40 days Lenten season that will culminate in Easter.

The CAN President urged leaders at all levels to move beyond drafting policies and focus on implementing them effectively. “Nigeria does not lack policies. The real challenge is ensuring they are implemented fairly, transparently, and in ways that bring real relief to citizens.

“Hence, leaders must be intentionally inclusive in their decisions, mindful of Nigeria’s diversity and sensitivities, and committed to making sure government programmes truly reach the households, young people, and communities they are meant to serve.”

He noted that Nigeria is passing through a challenging period, and that many households are struggling with the rising cost of living, uncertain job opportunities, and daily economic pressures.

He also noted that in several parts of the country, security concerns continue to affect communities and test the confidence of citizens. “These realities call for practical action, responsible leadership, and a shared commitment to finding lasting solutions.”

He encourage citizens to reject division, violence, and the spread of false information, insisting that our diversity across faith, ethnicities, and cultures remains one of Nigeria’s greatest strengths. “Continued cooperation among religious communities, mutual respect, and responsible civic conduct are essential for maintaining peace and national stability.

“To our young people, whose creativity and determination shape the nation’s future, this period should be a reminder to channel your energy into innovation, productive enterprise, and responsible participation in public life.

“As we mark this Ash Wednesday, may it renew our collective commitment to justice, compassion, and responsible citizenship. Nigeria’s progress will depend on what all of us, leaders and citizens alike, choose to build together,” he urged.
