The Centre for Black and African Arts and Civilization (CBAAC) yesterday opened its doors to a delegation from Art X Lagos, turning a routine studio tour into a celebration of creativity and cultural partnership.

The group, a mix of local and international artists led by Art X Documentation Head, Jumoke Sanwo and tour guide Pele Awofeso, was warmly welcomed by CBAAC’s Director‑General, Aisha Adamu Augie, and her senior management team.

After a concise orientation on CBAAC’s mission and a quick dive into the legacy of FESTAC’77, Deputy Director of Research and Publications, Adedosunmu  Adesegun guided the visitors through the centre’s galleries.

The artists were visibly moved by the breadth of the collection, describing the space as a “treasure house that tells the story of the Black and African peoples.”

“We were overwhelmed by the depth of the collection. Seeing the works that chronicle our shared history reaffirmed why Art X Lagos exists, to spotlight and nurture African creativity,” said Sanwo.

In a show of mutual admiration, the Art X Lagos team pledged ongoing collaboration with CBAAC, promising to feature the centre’s work in future programming and to support joint initiatives aimed at propagating Black and African arts. Responding,  Augie reaffirmed CBAAC’s open‑door policy for artists affiliated with Art X Lagos.

“This partnership aligns perfectly with CBAAC’s mandate to nurture young creatives and amplify African narratives on the global stage,” she said.

“We look forward to co‑curating exhibitions, residencies and research projects that celebrate our heritage,” she added.

CBAAC is a federal institution dedicated to preserving, promoting and propagating the artistic and cultural heritage of Black and African peoples.
Through exhibitions, research, publications and educational programmes, CBAAC serves as a “treasure house” for the continent’s creative legacy.
