Arsenal produced a disciplined display to secure a valuable 1-1 draw against Atlético Madrid in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final on Wednesday night.

The result leaves the tie finely poised ahead of next week’s decisive return leg at the Emirates Stadium, with Arsenal knowing a home victory will book their place in the final.

After weathering Atletico’s early pressure, the Gunners struck just before half-time. Viktor Gyokeres kept his composure from the penalty spot in the 44th minute after David Hancko brought him down inside the area.

It was a deserved lead for Mikel Arteta’s side, who showed maturity and control in a tense opening half at the Metropolitano.

Atletico responded after the break and found their equaliser in the 56th minute. Julian Alvarez converted from 12 yards after VAR confirmed Ben White had handled Marcos Llorente’s goal-bound effort.

The visitors thought they had a golden chance to restore their lead late in the match when referee Danny Makkelie pointed to the spot after Eberechi Eze went down under another challenge from Hancko.

However, after a lengthy VAR review, the penalty decision was overturned, much to Arsenal’s frustration.

Despite the late controversy, Arsenal will be the more satisfied of the two sides.

They matched Atletico physically, remained composed under pressure and created enough chances to believe they can finish the job in north London.

With the away leg safely negotiated, Arteta’s men now hold the psychological edge as they chase a place in the Champions League final.
