From George Onyejiuwa, Owerri
The National Coordinator of the Coalition of All APC Women Support Groups, Hon Oluchi Erondu, has called on political leaders to prioritise women’s inclusion in the political process. She highlighted this as compensation for women’s marginalisation in other spheres of governance, particularly in the National and State Houses of Assembly and positions of authority.
She emphasised that as most states gear up to conduct local government polls following the recent Supreme Court judgement, women should be considered in the elections.
Speaking in Owerri, Imo State capital, on Wednesday, Hon Erondu said, “Women’s participation in Nigerian politics has been historically limited, with minimal representation in decision-making roles. This dearth of female voices perpetuates gender inequality and hinders the nation’s progress.”

She added, “It is timely and compelling to ensure women’s inclusion in local government elections. By doing so, Nigeria can tap into the unique perspectives and strengths of women leaders.”
The women’s leader noted that the inclusion of women in political decision-making would:
- Foster more inclusive and equitable decision-making
- Address the socio-economic needs of women and marginalised communities
- Enhance the credibility and legitimacy of democratic institutions
“The local government level is an ideal starting point for this transformative shift. By empowering women to take on leadership roles, Nigeria can create a ripple effect, inspiring future generations of female leaders and catalysing systemic change. The time for women’s empowerment in Nigerian politics is now,” she submitted.
