The Senate on Thursday witnessed another shift in party alignment as Senator Pam Dachungyang, representing Plateau North Senatorial District, formally defected from the Action Democratic Party (ADP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The defection was conveyed through a letter addressed to the Senate and read on the floor during plenary by the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio.
In the letter, Dachungyang said his decision was compelled by what he described as persistent internal crises and irreconcilable differences that have continued to weaken cohesion within the ADP.
“My decision to withdraw my membership from the Action Democratic Party is informed by deep-seated and irreconcilable differences, as well as persistent internal crises within the party,” the senator wrote.

He disclosed that the move followed wide consultations with his constituents and key political stakeholders across Plateau North Senatorial District.
According to him, the APC offers a more stable and credible platform that aligns with his vision for good governance, sustainable development and effective representation of the people he serves.
“After wide consultations, I have resolved to join the All Progressives Congress, which provides a platform that better reflects my principles and commitment to delivering meaningful development to my people,” Dachungyang stated.
In announcing the defection, Akpabio acknowledged receipt of the letter and advised lawmakers to consistently prioritise the interests of their constituents over partisan affiliations.
