Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said the objectives that led to the formation of the All Progressives Congress in 2014 have not been realised, warning that Nigeria’s democratic and economic challenges have deteriorated.
Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, Atiku recalled that the APC was formed by opposition figures who believed democracy was faltering and required urgent rescue, particularly in the areas of insecurity, the economy and governance.
“We did this exercise in 2014, not so? We came together and formed APC because we felt democracy was faltering, only for us to end up at the same position we found ourselves in 2014, worse,” he said.

He argued that the core issues that defined the political climate at the time have deepened rather than eased. “In 2014, the major challenges were insecurity, the economy and so on. Now it is even worse than what we fought against,” Atiku stated.
The former presidential candidate stressed that the country must recommit itself to rebuilding its democratic institutions and restoring public confidence in governance.
“We must have that in mind. We must succeed to make sure that we restore true democracy to our country,” he added.
Atiku’s remarks come amid renewed debates over governance, security and economic management, as political actors reposition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
