The new Deputy National Chairman (South) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ben Nwoye, has paid a courtesy visit to the former National Auditor of the party, Dr George Moghalu, appealing to him to return to the ruling party.

Nwoye, who emerged as the replacement for his predecessor, Emma Eneukwu, during the APC National Convention last weekend, told Daily Sun that the visit was part of his resolution to reach out to the founding fathers of the party.

Describing Moghalu as instrumental to his successful rise to the party leadership pinnacle, he also appealed to him to reconsider his decision to leave the party.

Responding, Moghalu, who contested the Anambra State governorship election in November last year as the Labour Party (LP) candidate, thanked Nwoye and promised to consider his appeal.

Asked about his mission at Moghalu’s residence, Nwoye said: “I came to see my leader and one of the founding fathers of the APC after my emergence as the Deputy National Chairman (South). Prior to the election, we promised that we are going to mend fences and celebrate our founding fathers.”

“We will not just continue rejoicing and celebrating new members joining us while we discard and disrespect the founding fathers. They are the people that lay the foundation for this party. It was on the shoulders of the founding fathers that we are resting to stand tall.

“I know what happened in the last Anambra election when we lost some of our members and our leaders to other political parties and I made a promise to myself and to my supporters that, should I emerge victorious, the mission to rebuild the party will start and that is why I came here to fulfil that promise.

“When I called him to inform him about my visit, he did not hesitate to open his doors,” he said.

On his take on the pressure from friends and associates appealing to Moghalu to return to the party, Nwoye said: “The appeal is simple. Yes, I am now the leader of the party in the entire South, but I would not have been with the party as long as I have without someone like him.

“There is this old saying that you can’t build a house and not use it. The party needs Moghalu now more than ever. We have very crucial elections in 2027; parties don’t win elections by pushing people away. The South-East, especially, is a ground zero for the opposition parties, be it the ADC, LP or the PDP, where they draw support from.

“We need a voice like him to say that Ndigbo must support President Tinubu for a second term re-election,” he appealed.

In his response, Moghalu said: “I am obviously very happy that the Deputy National Chairman of our party came on a courtesy visit to my house and I used the opportunity to congratulate and wish him well. I have heard his request and I will respond accordingly, but I am happy that he came and I appreciate the recognition and I assure him that I will give him all the necessary support he needs to succeed.

“His emergence was not a surprise to me because he has paid his dues. When I was the National Auditor of the party, he was the chairman of the Enugu State chapter of the party. So, we have known ourselves for quite a while.

“My prayer for him is that he must succeed and, in fact, he has no choice but to succeed. As for his appeal to return to the party, I will give it consideration,” he noted.
