Akwa Ibom PDP urges army to eschew partisanship

The ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP), in Akwa Ibom State has urged the security agencies, especially the Nigeria Army, to be wary of dragging themselves into partisan politics.

The party advised the army Headquarters in Abuja to make sure its officers and men in Akwa Ibom, maintain untainted professionalism and civilised conduct before, during and after tomorrow’s gubernatorial and state assemblies elections.

According to the PDP, any attempt by any party to disrupt the will of voters may lead to more consequences than the nation can attend. Nigeria, it warned, is not a banana republic and should not be treated as such.

In a release signed by its state Publicity Secretary, Ini Ememobong, the PDP warned that any attempt by the army and/or any security agency to intimidate or compromise the elections is a direct assault on democracy and constitutionalism. Ememobong, therefore, advised the Chief of Army Staff, General Tukur Buratai, to make sure it is not under his command that soldiers would turn partisan. Ememobong further canvassed that the worst historical disgrace Buratai may suffer is for the Nigerian Army, under him, to be recorded as having helped trigger the collapse of the country’s democracy.
