The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has urged Nigerians to take a cue from American voters who rejected President Donald Trump’s Republican Party in Tuesday’s United States midterm elections and use their votes to dislodge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.
The opposition party said the outcome of the American elections, in which the Democratic Party secured control of both chambers of Congress, demonstrated that political power ultimately belonged to the people and that no government, regardless of its popularity or political strength, could take the electorate for granted.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC said the American experience offered Nigerians an important lesson in democratic accountability, particularly at a time when citizens were grappling with economic hardship, worsening insecurity and dwindling employment opportunities.
The party accused the administration of President Bola Tinubu of pursuing policies that had deepened the suffering of ordinary Nigerians, arguing that the 2027 elections presented an opportunity for voters to demand better governance rather than reward what it described as years of hardship and failed promises.
According to the ADC, the American electorate had demonstrated that the ballot box remained the ultimate instrument through which citizens could hold their leaders accountable and reject policies that undermined their welfare.
“Americans have shown that when politicians become arrogant, when policies punish ordinary people, and when those in power mistake popularity for a permanent licence to govern, the ballot box remains the ultimate instrument of accountability.
“American voters understand something Nigerians must also learn: elections are about the welfare of the citizens, not sentiments, political loyalties or personality cults. No leader is bigger than the people, and no political party is entitled to power forever,” the statement read.
The ADC maintained that Nigerians could no longer afford to allow ethnic, religious or partisan considerations to override their economic interests and expectations of good governance, stressing that the country’s prevailing challenges required voters to make informed decisions about those seeking public office.

It argued that the hardship experienced by Nigerians under the present administration should serve as a compelling reason for citizens to reassess their political choices ahead of the next general elections.
“We cannot continue to complain about the cost of living while voting for a President who has made life unaffordable. We cannot demand security while rewarding failure. We cannot earnestly yearn for change while sustaining the very political system responsible for our collective impoverishment,” the party stated.
The ADC consequently called for massive voter mobilisation ahead of the 2027 polls, urging Nigerians to regard their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) as instruments for determining the country’s political future rather than merely as proof of their registration as voters.
It said the next general elections would provide an opportunity for Nigerians to decide whether to continue with the present political leadership or embrace an alternative that would prioritise economic recovery, national security, employment generation and improved living conditions.
“History beckons in 2027. Our voters’ cards must become instruments of change, not souvenirs of citizenship. Nigerians must turn out massively and vote for their own interests.
“ADC and its candidates are offering Nigerians a clear alternative: Make Nigeria Affordable Again. Make Nigeria Safe Again. Give Nigerians Jobs Again,” the statement added.
The opposition party insisted that the lesson from the American elections was that citizens possessed the power to change their leaders peacefully through the ballot whenever they became dissatisfied with their performance.
“If Americans can use their votes to demand better, Nigerians can do the same. In 2027, let our votes speak louder than the APC-induced suffering,” the ADC declared.
