The Akwa Ibom State chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has issued a five-day ultimatum to the management of St. Luke’s Hospital, Anua, in Uyo.

The ultimatum targets poor pay and the hospital’s failure to remit mandatory association dues. St. Luke’s Hospital is a missionary facility owned and managed by the Catholic Mission.

In a communiqué signed by the state NMA Chairman, Prof. Aniekan Peters, the association explained that the five-day window aims to bring management to the negotiating table. The NMA demands that staff salaries be reviewed upward to match the CONMESS (Consolidated Medical Salary Structure) scale and that clear conditions of service be established. The congress warned that if negotiations fail, doctors will launch a warning strike, which could escalate into an indefinite strike.

The association wants doctors’ pay aligned with the standard CONMESS wage scale. The association warned doctors will begin a warning strike, potentially followed by a full industrial action, if management refuses to compromise.
