Akakuru makes Nigeria’s top researchers’ list

Dr Obinna Akakuru, a lecturer at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) and an Adjunct Professor at the University of Cincinnati, United States, has emerged as one of nation’s most visible scientific voices in the areas of groundwater quality, hydrogeo-chemistry, environmental sustainability, artificial intelligence and machine learning applications in environmental systems, and policy-relevant science.

His recent inclusion among the top 500 researchers in Nigeria (2022–2026), is based on ground breaking in hydrogeo – chemistry (Source: Elsevier SciVal analytics platform, using Scopus-indexed publication data), places him among the nation’s most influential contemporary researchers.

This recognition is regarded as a testament not only to individual excellence, but also to Nigeria’s growing capacity to produce scholars whose work resonates far beyond national borders.

Akakuru’s research portfolio spans sub-Saharan Africa, the United States, and multiple global research hubs, addressing urgent challenges related to water security, environmental risk, climate resilience, and sustainable development.

At FUTO, Dr. Akakuru, a native of Obazu Mbieri in Mbaitoli council area of Imo State, had previously taught at the Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education Owerri before joining FUTO in 2019, he is an adjunct Professor in the Department of Chemical and Environmental Engineering, University of Cincinnati, United States where he supports practical training in hydraulic and environmental systems.

He is the Founder and Executive Director of Magma Group LLC, a U.S-based environmental, research, and sustainability consulting firm. Through Magma Group, he has built a unique platform that translates complex scientific data into actionable solutions for industry, communities.

According him “science must move beyond publications and directly inform decisions that affect lives, infrastructure, and the environment”.

He is has been a mentor to students at both University of Toledo and the University of Cincinnati. ” I am committed to mentorship and capacity building. I have consistently supported and guided emerging scientists particularly those from underrepresented regions into global research spaces, fostering a new generation of scholars equipped to lead at international levels,” he added.

As his work expands across disciplines and continents, observers note that Akakuru’s career represents not just personal success, but a broader narrative of Nigerian excellence, global relevance, and science in service of society.
