Air Peace historic Abuja-London Heathrow flight

MENTION the name of Dr. Allen Ifechukwu Onyema, many an ear in the aviation and business sectors stand up straight. No wonder, these days, the mention of Air Peace guarantees attention. It’s not for nothing. People listen because they respect the authority behind the brand. They also respect the authority of experience – distilled, analytical, intentional, laser-focused, thoughtful and disciplined mind, competence, driven by vision. People are eager to profit from his ideas. The story of Onyema is simple to understand: Great dreams are meant to be realised. It is this vision that propelled the founding of Air Peace eleven years ago. The message for Nigerians who are still searching for a role model and a philosophy to live by, is that, success is not imported. It’s discovered right at home.

Penultimate Sunday, October 26, was a day never to be forgotten in the annals of aviation industry in Nigeria. It was a historic milestone that has redefined the narrative in the country. That was the day Air Peace, the largest regional carrier inscribed its name into the golden scroll of history. On that day, the atmosphere at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International airport, Abuja was rarefied. A tightly knit coterie of both executive power brokers and private sector big-wigs were on hand, eager and happy to witness the unique event. It was a fulfillment of a vision rooted in national pride, unwavering commitment to safety, and global competitiveness.

On this day, October 26, Air Peace inaugurated non-stop commercial flights between Abuja and London Heathrow. It was a development that marked yet another historic first for a Nigerian carrier. Imagine that before now, you were paying a hefty airfare as high as US$13,000 from Abuja to London. But now, it has been slashed drastically to just $3,000. That’s by all standards, a turning point for Nigerians travelling to the United Kingdom . It’s also a proof, according to the Chairman of Air Peace, of what effective collaboration between government and the private enterprise can achieve. It’s a classic example of government paving the way for the private sector to thrive.

President Bola Tinubu, in the words of Onyema, “pulled this off”. He made it happen. Undeniably, the credit goes goes to the President. The entry of Air Peace into the lucrative UK route through the intervention of President Tinubu, has forced foreign airlines to review their ticket prices downwards. This is benefiting all passengers traveling on Abuja -London.

For those unaware, this route is far more than a new flight path. It’s an audacious statement. It signals that Abuja, the nation’s capital, the heartbeat of Nigerian governance and diplomacy, is indeed, worthy of direct, dignified, and seamless international access.

It is only fitting, and appropriate, that this access is being championed by a proudly indigenous world class airline – Air Peace. I witnessed this maiden, historic flight. Also significant, is that the new Abuja -London Heathrow service is being operated daily by Air Peace flagship Boeing 777 aircraft, configured with a total of 312 seats, including 26 luxurious First class/Business seats and 286 Economy cabins, all thoughtfully arranged to provide a combination of  comfort, privacy, spacious legroom and refined service in the Economy class, and a truly elevated inflight experience for valued travellers.

It also adds  tastefully interiors and a menu that combines global flavours with Nigerian culinary heritage that makes international travels a delight something to always look forward to. In addition, the new route, Onyema explains, builds upon the remarkable success story of Air Peace Lagos -London Gatwick service, which he describes as a “game changer” in the international aviation space. You see, that route is reported to have disrupted monopolies, drove down fares, and raised service standards across board. With the Abuja -Heathrow route now on, the management of Air Peace intends to, not only to replicate that achievement, but to surpass it, making every trip something to remember.

The management of Air Peace has also assured that its carefully selected, and rigourously trained crew, are not just attendants, but ambassadors of its hospitality. Each passenger will be treated as a ‘guest of honour’. That’s what, in advertising parlance, makes a company a “Unique Selling” brand. It’s the first time any Nigerian carrier will be flying both the Lagos-London Gatwick and Abuja -London Heathrow routes simultaneously. This has opened the corridor, not just to Europe, but to the entire world. All of this is anchored on Air Peace powerful philosophy of: “No City Left Behind”.

That vision continues to guide its domestic, regional, and now, intercontinental expansion. According to Onyema, it’s more than building an airline. “We are building a symbol of national resilience and African excellence. We are training Nigerian pilots and engineers, expanding our aircraft maintenance capabilities, and investing in infrastructure that empowers local talent”. Air Peace, he also says, “is not just about flying; it’s about lifting people, communities, and a nation toward a more connected and confident future”.

During the inaugural ceremony organised by the London -Heathrow authorities to welcome Air Peace first flight, the Executive Director, International Operations, Nnenna Onyema, reiterated the philosophy behind the airline’s ongoing expansion drive, saying, it’s not only a symbol of national pride and resilience, it’s also part of restoring Nigeria’s flag to one of the world’s busiest air corridors after more than a decade. Her words, “For years, there was silence in the skies, today, that silence ends. Our flag flies again because, as we say back home, “Naija no dey carry last”. Truly so. It is a mark of the undaunted spirit that sees opportunities in every challenge. She sees the new route  as a “seed of hope”.

Allen Onyema’s remarkable effort marks a rebirth of Nigeria’s aviation strength and a bright future where Nigeria connects seamlessly with the world, stronger and ready to compete globally. For Nigerians in diaspora, especially in the UK, the London-Abuja route will enhance accessibility and connectivity for Nigerians and wider Africa diaspora. Through Air Peace extensive network, passengers can travel beyond Abuja to destinations across West Africa. This will enable onward connectivity from Ghana, The Gambia, Sierra Leone, Liberia and Senegal. Air Peace, its management and staff, as well as its Chairman, deserve all the stream of accolades that have been pouring in.

According to the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, his ministry went to work based on the mandate given by President Tinubu to fully support local airline operators to ensure that their businesses survive and thrive. He decried the collapse of many local airlines in the past, a situation he said, the present administration would not allow to happen again. He maintained that a healthy economy relies on a strong private sector that provides  job opportunities. That underscores government’s efforts to create an enabling environment that will strengthen local airline operators. The goal is to give them the required competitive leverage.

By far, Air Peace has become an example of what the Tinubu government is doing to encourage fair competition. That’s already reflecting in the sharp reduction of airfares to London. As Keyamo puts it, “let’s see what foreign airlines will do in the same route. That is free market economy in practice”. It must be said that the historic maiden flight was a result of months of high-level diplomatic exchanges between Nigeria and the UK government. With Heathrow, you can connect every part of the world. That is a remarkable feat that Air Peace has pulled off. It attests to the fact that there’s a lot one man with vision can do. Without vision beyond one’s own advancement, success is limited.

That is why Onyema maintains that Air Peace is a story of “inclusion, ambition,  and belief in our shared potential”. Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, captures it all, when he said that “Allen Onyema is a perfect brand of simplicity and audacity, a role model for business entrepreneurship, a man who has demonstrated that true success lies in serving humanity”. The Managing Director, Fidelity Bank, Dr. Nneka Onyeali-Ikpe, spoke in similar vein. She said the inaugural flight “reflects the strength of indigenous enterprise and the growing confidence in Nigeria’s aviation sector”. Taken as a whole, Onyema and his management team must not rest on their oars. Airline business is like a marathon. Runners don’t rest until they get to the finishing line. That’s why Onyema and his team  should see the achievements recorded so far as just the beginning of a higher horizon.
