Agony as flood sacks over 300 households in Benue

From Scholastica Hir, Makurdi

Over 300 households have been sacked after continued rainfall flooded homes in Makurdi, Benue State.

The rain, which fell from the early hours of Monday, affected most parts of Makurdi, especially flood-prone areas.

Some of the areas affected include Gyado Villa, Wadata, Wurukum, Achusa and parts of North bank all in Makurdi metropolis.

When our correspondent went round town, some residents were  seen evacuating their household items that were submerged by the flood.

One of the affected residents, Terhemba Pine, said he refused to relocate with his family to the designated points closer to their area because he thought that the rain would not fall heavily again.

Pine, landlord in the Achusa area, said he lost several valuables including foodstuffs and documents.

“My children could not go to school because they could not cross the main road leading to their schools,” he said.

Executive Secretary, State Emergency Management Agency, (SEMA), Sir James Iorpuu, said the agency was prepared to respond to the needs of those who may have been affected by the flood.

Iorpuu who spoke through the information officer of SEMA, stated that many residents who are living around flood-prone areas particularly in Gaadi and Wadata have relocated to the government approved designated camps in Wadata and Gboko road.

While stating that it was difficult to ascertain the exact number of people affected by the rain, he appealed to those left behind by the river banks and flood prone areas to relocate to safe areas.
