A former Attorney-General of the Federation, Kanu Agabi, has called for more courageous voices to champion national unity and good governance, describing Matthew Kukah as a fearless advocate who has consistently spoken against injustice and for a better Nigeria.
Speaking on Monday in Abuja at the presentation of the book, Reflections of A Shepherd; The Quotations of Bishop Matthew Kukah, Agabi said Kukah has remained one of the nation’s strongest moral voices, refusing to stay silent in the face of oppression and bad governance.
Chairing the event, the Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) described the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto as “the conscience of society,” noting that he speaks for all Nigerians irrespective of religious affiliation.
“By our silence, many of us have become complicit with violence and oppression. Bishop Kukah has not been silent. He never stops protesting the evils that ravage the nation,” Agabi said.
He praised Kukah’s courage, intellect and unwavering commitment to justice, adding that his influence extends beyond the Church, with political leaders, religious organisations and even foreign institutions seeking his counsel.
The 229-page book, written by James Swam, is a compilation of some of Bishop Kukah’s notable quotations delivered over the years on governance, democracy, justice, religion and national development.
According to the author, the publication captures the depth of Kukah’s intellect and offers readers an opportunity to reflect on the messages contained in his speeches and public interventions.
