Chairman of Ace Mall, Prince Adeyinka Afonja, has reinforced his commitment to healthcare development with the donation of a state-of-the-art Humphrey Visual Field Machine to the Ophthalmology Department of the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, Oyo State.
The high-tech equipment is expected to significantly enhance eye care services at the tertiary hospital by improving diagnostic capacity and reducing the long waiting time faced by patients requiring visual field tests.
Commending the gesture, the Chief Medical Director of UCH, Professor Jesse Otegbayo, described the donation as timely and impactful, stressing that government alone cannot shoulder the burden of funding healthcare services.
“There is nowhere in the world where government alone can fund health services,” Otegbayo said, highlighting the vital role of private individuals and philanthropists in strengthening the healthcare system. He expressed appreciation to Prince Afonja on behalf of the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, and the entire UCH community.
The Head of the Ophthalmology Department, Dr. Oluleye, revealed that the donation followed a simple request prompted by the pressure on the department’s only visual field machine, which had become overused due to high patient demand.
“I only sent a message saying I wish we had another one to make the work faster, reduce the long booking list and reach more patients,” Dr. Oluleye recalled.
According to him, Prince Afonja’s swift response culminating in the delivery of a modern machine valued at about $8,000 left the department overwhelmed with gratitude.
Speaking on his motivation, Prince Afonja gave glory to God for the opportunity to contribute, noting that his passion for eye care support is rooted in personal experience.
