Aero Contractors Airlines Nigeria has sealed a deal with the civil aviation authorities of Ghana and the Republic of Congo to carry out comprehensive checks and maintenance (C-Checks) on Boeing 737-500 classic aircraft from the two countries at its Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) hanger in Lagos.
Managing Director/CEO of Aero Contractors, Capt. Ado Sanusi, who disclosed this recently said the airline’s decision to divest into the establishment of a MRO is paying off with growing patronage from Nigerian airlines and recent requests from Ghana and Congo to have their C-checks done in Lagos.
Sanusi who spoke while unveiling the airline’s new cabin crew uniform and accessories said three c-checks have been successfully carried out at the Aero MRO in the last one year with more aircraft queuing for similar checks within the year. Nigerian airlines spend an average of $2million to carry out a c-check at an overseas MRO while at the Aero MRO that amount is halved, meaning that Aero MRO would save Nigerian airlines an estimated $90million annually. Sanusi, however played down on the financial gains made from investing in the MRO saying the focus for now was in quality service delivery to clients.
“The MRO is doing very well, and I am very happy about it. We have done three C-checks in-house, we have done a couple of 18-months check for some Nigerian airlines. We are about to do a C-check for another airline. And we have a couple of Nigerian airlines that are lined up for C-checks this year,” Said Sanusi.
“We are not interested in making mega profit now. What we are interested is to develop the MRO and to ensure that we render quality service to our customers. We want a situation where Nigerian airlines are very comfortable bringing their airplanes here and we want to deliver their airplanes with a c-check that is better than what they get outside the country.
“We are happy to inform you that the Ghana Civil Aviation has given us the authority to do checks on aircraft registered in their country and we have done a lot of major maintenance for their aircraft. “We are also looking at the Congolese government, who have shown interest in coming to give us the approval to do C-checks and other major checks for their country,” he added.
