Advocacy for HIV/AIDS Rights intensifies in Nasarawa State

From Abel Leonard, Lafia

People living with HIV/AIDS in Nasarawa State are urging the government to take decisive action against stigma and rights violations targeting vulnerable groups in rural areas.

Mrs. Ruth Dauda, the Nasarawa State Coordinator for the Network of People Living with HIV and AIDS in Nigeria (NEPWHAN), emphasized the need for proactive measures during an advocacy visit to the National Human Rights Commission in Lafia on Friday.

She stated, “We call on the government and relevant agencies to set up a proactive mechanism to tackle stigmatization and violation of rights in rural areas.”

Sunday Sun reports that NEPWHAN is overseeing a two-year grant focusing on strengthening healthcare access in rural areas, particularly in five local government areas of Nasarawa State.

Mrs. Dauda led an advocacy team, including fifteen community-based organizations, to engage with relevant agencies on issues such as gender-based violence and access to public infrastructure and healthcare. “Our goal is to ensure facilities are strengthened and healthcare access is equitable,” Mrs. Dauda affirmed.

Highlighting the challenges faced by vulnerable groups, Mrs. Mary Asheneye of the advocacy group noted, “Most rural communities, especially those affected by AIDS and Tuberculosis, suffer from stigmatization and inadequate care.” She stressed the necessity for collective action to bring about positive change.

Responding to these concerns, Mr. Nduka Ezenwugo, representing the National Human Rights Commission, assured, “The Commission remains committed to upholding global human rights standards and addressing cases of abuse.” He commended the advocacy group for their efforts in addressing critical human rights issues in their programs.

Mr. Ezenwugo emphasized, “Our services at the National Human Rights Commission are provided free of charge,” affirming the Commission’s dedication to supporting victims of rights abuses. The advocacy efforts highlighted the crucial need for heightened sensitization and support mechanisms for vulnerable groups across Nasarawa State.

During the meeting, discussions centered on the processes involved in the prosecution of human rights abuse cases, underscoring the importance of collaboration between advocacy groups and government agencies. Mr. Abel Okopi, a Principal Investigation Officer, emphasized the Commission’s role in ensuring justice and accountability.
