Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has called on politicians and members of the political class to practise politics without bitterness, saying politics should promote public peace and good governance.
Similarly, Senator Ajibola Basiru, the National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), echoed the view that political differences should not destroy human and family relationships.
A statement issued on Wednesday by Governor Adeleke’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, said the meeting took place during a condolence visit by the governor to Dr Basiru over the death of his mother.
Adeleke, who was accompanied by the Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Rt Hon. Adewale Egbedun, and other members of the State Executive Council, urged politicians to campaign in line with established rules and within the framework of peace and security.
He said politics should not be a “do-or-die” affair and that “shedding blood is no longer politics.”

The governor maintained that campaigns should be peaceful and issue-based, and that brothers and political allies should not become enemies because of politics.
He also noted that he had once been a member of the APC alongside some family members and stressed that unity should prevail over violence and division.
Responding, Dr Basiru appreciated the condolence visit and described it as a demonstration of love that transcends political affiliation.
He said he has friends and associates across party lines and stressed that such relationships should continue, adding that he supports politics “without bitterness” and appreciates the state government for sympathising with his family during the difficult period.
