By John Ogunsemore

The leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Southwest Zone D, on Tuesday led a fact-finding visit to the office of the Commissioner of Police, Osun State Command, CP Ibrahim Gotan, over an incident involving a student and some police officers in the state, which left the student, his wife, and their two children injured.

Coordinator, NANS Southwest, Comrade Josiah Kayode Adeyemo, aka Billioncodes, disclosed this in a Wednesday statement sent to SunOnline.

Adeyemo said the zonal leadership in company of the victim was at the commissioner’s office to “seek clarity, accountability, and justice” over the matter.

On February 22, NANS Southwest raised alarm over the incident which reportedly occurred between Itaolokan Junction and Oke Ayepe area in Osogbo.

Wednesday’s statement reads, “The Office of the Coordinator, National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) Southwest Zone D, wishes to formally address Nigerian students and the general public regarding the unfortunate incident involving a student and officers of the Nigeria Police Force in Osun State, which resulted in a distressing accident that left the student, his wife, and their two children injured.

“Upon receiving credible reports that officers allegedly pushed the student’s vehicle during an encounter, leading to an accident, tensions heightened as witnesses and concerned students expressed outrage and were prepared to embark on immediate protest actions.

“In a bid to prevent escalation and ensure a civilised, lawful approach to justice, the Coordinator of NANS Southwest, Comrade Adeyemo Josiah Kayode (BILLIONCODES), swiftly directed the Assistant General Secretary, Comrade Abubakar Musefiu (GOLDEN SON), to promptly attend to the situation while he was away in Abuja on official assignment.

“Demonstrating responsible and intellectual leadership, the COORDINATOR upon his return personally led a delegation of comrades alongside the victim to the office of the Commissioner of Police, Osun State Command, CP IBRAHIM GOTAN, to seek clarity, accountability, and justice over the matter.

“The NANS delegation was warmly received at the Commissioner’s office, reflecting a shared commitment to dialogue and peaceful resolution.

“During the meeting, the victim was given the opportunity to narrate his ordeal.

“He explained that he was stopped while driving and complied accordingly.

“However, he alleged that he was suddenly slapped, which caused fear and confusion.

“In an attempt to safeguard himself and his family, he drove off, not clearly identifying the individuals as police officers at that moment.

“In the course of trying to escape, his vehicle veered off into a canal, leading to injuries sustained by him and his family members.”

The statement quoted the police commissioner as appreciating the mature and strategic approach adopted by the NANS Southwest leadership over the matter.

He acknowledged that the situation could have degenerated if handled differently and commended the Coordinator for choosing dialogue over confrontation.

The commissioner further stated that he has consistently organised training programmes emphasising professionalism, humanity, and improved relationships between the police and students.

He assured the delegation that the matter would be personally handled under his supervision and that justice would be served accordingly.

The Coordinator, in his remarks, reiterated that while NANS remains a formidable voice in the defence of Nigerian students, the association prioritises peace, due process, and constructive engagement with authorities.

He appreciated the Commissioner of Police and the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, for their receptiveness and proactive disposition.

He further emphasised that the safety, dignity, and welfare of Nigerian students remain paramount under his leadership.

“NANS Southwest therefore assures all Nigerian students that this matter is being closely monitored and followed up to ensure that fairness and justice prevail.

“We call on students to remain calm, law-abiding, and united as the leadership continues to engage relevant authorities in protecting the rights and security of every Nigerian student.

“Justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done,” the statement further reads.
