The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Congress has summoned an emergency meeting in Abuja following the reported resignation of the federation’s President, Ibrahim Gusau, and members of his Executive Committee.
The meeting, scheduled for 12 noon today, is expected to provide an opportunity for Congress members to deliberate on the latest developments within the federation and determine the way forward.
An invitation signed by Yakubu Sarma on behalf of NFF Congress members was sent to chairmen of State Football Associations, club representatives, the Referees Association, Coaches Association, Players Union and the Nigeria Referees Association (NRA).
Attendance was described as mandatory, with the meeting expected to consider five major issues affecting the federation.
The agenda includes recent developments within the NFF, the status and functioning of the Executive Committee and Secretariat, and the implications of the reported resignations for the governance, stability and independence of Nigerian football.
Congress members are also expected to consider appropriate measures under the statutes of the NFF, Confederation of African Football (CAF) and FIFA before determining the way forward.
The emergency meeting comes after reports that Gusau and members of his Executive Committee resigned on Wednesday amid growing criticism of the performance of Nigeria’s national teams.

The reported resignations followed a difficult period for Nigerian football, with the Super Eagles missing out on the 2022 and 2026 FIFA World Cups.
The Super Falcons have also failed to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, while Nigeria’s U-17, U-20 and U-23 teams have struggled in recent international competitions.
The Golden Eaglets, who have won the FIFA U-17 World Cup a record five times, have missed the last three editions of the tournament.
Nigeria’s U-23 side, the Dream Team, has similarly struggled to reproduce the success associated with the team that won Olympic football gold in 1996.
The string of disappointing results has intensified calls from football stakeholders and supporters for changes in the administration and development of the sport.
Against this backdrop, today’s emergency Congress meeting is expected to be closely watched as members consider the implications of Gusau’s reported resignation and the potential impact on the NFF’s leadership and operations.
The invitation stated that details of travel and accommodation arrangements would be communicated to Congress members.
