Senator Orji Uzor Kalu’s ongoing education intervention across Abia North Senatorial District recorded fresh milestones in Ohafia and Umunneochi Local Government Areas, where pupils received school uniforms and over 400 new desks to improve their learning environment.
At Ebem Primary School in Ohafia, pupils received free school uniforms in a distribution carried out by the senator’s constituency team led by his Legislative Aide, M. U. Ayi, Esq. The exercise drew excitement from the children and appreciation from staff, who described the gesture as timely support for indigent pupils.
The Head Teacher of the school commended the senator for his consistent commitment to education and the wellbeing of children in the community, offering prayers for strength and guidance as he continues his service. Pupils and teachers expressed their gratitude through songs and prayers.
The Ohafia exercise forms part of a wider district-wide programme providing free uniforms to pupils in more than 300 primary schools across Umunneochi, Arochukwu, Isuikwuato, Ohafia and Bende.
Meanwhile, in Umunneochi, schools came alive with celebration as over 400 brand new desks were delivered to classrooms across the local government area. The desks, distributed through the senator’s office, were received with enthusiasm by pupils, teachers and parents who described the intervention as a major step toward improving classroom comfort and concentration.
At Leru Central School, Umuchieze where the programme was earlier flagged off by the senator’s Senior Legislative Aide, Victor Ettie teachers said the new desks immediately transformed the learning atmosphere. Pupils eagerly occupied the seats, expressing excitement at having a comfortable space to learn.
A headmistress in the area described the desks as “an investment in our children’s future,” noting that for years pupils had endured uncomfortable conditions in classrooms.

Teachers in Umunneochi reported improved attentiveness and participation from pupils following the installation of the desks, noting visible changes in classroom engagement and morale.
Speaking on the intervention, Senator Kalu said:
“My team distributed educational materials and over 400 desks to schools in Umunneochi LGA. These provisions are also going on simultaneously across other LGAs in Abia North. The pupils, teachers, parents and the entire Umunneochi people were highly elated to receive these important materials to enhance their learning capacity.
“Education remains the strongest tool for empowering our children and securing the future of Abia North. That is why we are not only building and renovating schools, but also ensuring that pupils have desks, textbooks and now uniforms to learn with dignity.”
Beyond uniforms and desks, the senator has sustained the distribution of school bags, science textbooks in Mathematics, Biology, Physics and Chemistry, and other instructional materials across the district.
Several schools have also benefited from construction and renovation projects, including Amankalu Primary School, St. Joseph Primary School and Amankwo Primary School in Bende; Leru Central School, Isuochi Central School and Lomara Central School in Umunneochi; as well as classroom projects in Community Primary School, Amaekpu Ohafia; Ndi Uduma Awoke Primary School; and Isiugwu Community School.
In addition to educational projects, Kalu has facilitated the construction and rehabilitation of key roads in Ohafia, including Abia Road, Akanu Ukwu Road, Isiugwu Road, Ndiorieke Eziafor Road, Ebem Township Road, Elu Ohafia Township Road and the Okagwe–Ohafia Road.
The senator noted that many of the schools currently undergoing renovation were originally built during his tenure as Governor of Abia State between 1999 and 2007 but had deteriorated over time due to neglect.
As Chairman of the Senate Committee on the South East Development Commission, Senator Kalu reaffirmed his commitment to expanding access to quality education and improving learning conditions for children across Abia North.
