The Bayelsa State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of 10 suspected cultists along the Obele end of Ovom in Yenagoa, the state capital, over their alleged involvement in a deadly cult attack that left a street-corner metal scavenger dead and three others injured.
The State Police Commissioner, CP Iyamah Daniel, said the suspects were arrested following a raid prompted by a Save Our Soul message from residents of the Obele area, who alleged that cultists were on the rampage and shooting indiscriminately to dispossess residents of their phones and other valuables.
Investigations revealed that the suspected cultists launched a nighttime raid on residents of Obele and dispossessed them of their phones and valuables.
However, there was stiff resistance from the street-corner metal scavengers, which led the suspected cultists to open fire on them, resulting in the death of one person, while three others were injured.

“The boys were on a massive raid. Many residents were caught unawares, and others ran into their houses for safety.
“The metal scavengers, however, resisted handing over their phones, and this infuriated the cult boys, who started shooting. One of the metal scavengers’ boys died in the hospital from a fatal gunshot wound, while three others survived.”
CP Iyamah Daniel has repeatedly urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement, emphasising that active community engagement is critical for intelligence-gathering and preventing crimes.
He assured that the suspected cult groups involved in the Obele attack will be brought to book and face the law.
