Former Special Assistant on Digital Communications to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, Bashir Ahmad has advocated for the splitting of Kano into five states.
Ahmad spoke in reaction to a proposal in the National Assembly to create 31 additional states in the country.
At Thursday’s plenary, the House of Representatives Committee on Constitutional Review said it received proposals for the creation of 31 new states in the federation.
Deputy Speaker, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, who presided over the plenary session, read the letter of the committee containing the proposed states.
If the proposal is approved, the states of the federation will increase from 36 to 67.
Reacting, Ahmad said Kano deserved to be split into five states due to its massive population.
“With the National Assembly’s proposal to create 31 new states in Nigeria, I strongly believe Kano, with its population nearing 20 million, deserves to be split into at least five states for better governance, development, and equitable resource distribution,” he said.
