- Encourages Grassroot Football, Poultry Farming
From Stanley Uzoaru, Owerri
The Amaroy Foundation, a philanthropic organization founded by Dr. Roy Kelechi Nwakamma, has distributed food items worth approximately 5 million naira to vulnerable residents of Eziala Ihitte in Ezinihitte Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State.
Nwakamma, a United States-based pharmacist, explained that his motivation for this initiative stemmed from the harsh economic conditions in Nigeria, which have disproportionately affected the poor. The distributed items included bags of rice, beans, onions, tomatoes, groundnut oil, packaged foods, and noodles.
The foundation has also been actively involved in empowering the community through various initiatives. They have trained individuals in poultry farming and drilled boreholes to provide access to clean water.
Nwakamma’s philanthropic journey began in 2021 when he empowered nine of his classmates from the 1984-1990 set of Government Secondary School Owerri by providing them with resources to start businesses in fishery, poultry, piggery, and snail farming. This initiative earned him the “Icon of Empowerment” award at the school’s 2022 Annual Reunion.
He has also empowered individuals in his community by opening businesses for them. Additionally, he has received recognition for his contributions, including the “Community Service Award” from the Nigeria Union of Journalists South East Zone and the “Pillar of Philanthropy Award” from the Nigeria Union of Journalists Imo State Council.
Nwakamma’s passion extends to sports development. He has organized and funded a football competition for youths in his community, aiming to encourage grassroots sports, promote unity, and provide financial empowerment. The competition involves five villages in Nneise and has awarded cash prizes to the winners.
Nwakamma believes that engaging youths in sports can prevent them from engaging in crime and provide them with opportunities to excel. He plans to make the Nneise Youth Football Competition an annual event.
