From Scholastica Hir, Makurdi
Rev. Fr. Philip Apuu, a Catholic priest in Makurdi Diocese, Benue State, has called on media professionals across Nigeria to use their platforms to communicate unity, truth, and love for the good of humanity.
Fr. Apuu made this call during a homily delivered at the Thanksgiving Mass organized by the Catholic Media Professionals Association of Nigeria (CAMPAN), Makurdi Diocese, to mark the 58th World Communications Day on May 12, 2024.
He emphasized the importance of unity and truth in communication, urging CAMPAN members and all media professionals to report in a manner that promotes greater understanding and unity among the people.
World Communications Day, established by Pope Paul VI in 1967, is an annual celebration that encourages reflection on the opportunities and challenges that modern means of social communication offer the Church in communicating the gospel message. Celebrated annually on the Sunday before Pentecost, the day highlights the achievements of the communications media and how it can best be used to promote the gospel.
The theme for this year’s celebration, chosen by Pope Francis, is “Artificial Intelligence and Wisdom of the Heart: Towards a Fully Human Communication.”
Speaking on the theme, Rev. Apuu acknowledged the benefits of artificial intelligence and technological advancements in communication and learning but stressed the need for balance between artificial intelligence and the wisdom of the heart.
He cautioned against the potential drawbacks of artificial intelligence, such as laziness in studies and facilitating insecurity. He emphasized the importance of using the heart, which symbolizes freedom and is the inward place of an encounter with God, to make sound decisions.
Drawing on the teachings of Jesus Christ, who emphasized unity before his departure, Fr. Apuu urged media professionals to promote unity, truth, and love among all people. He expressed hope that by hearing the gospel, people would learn to communicate rightly for the unity and progress of humanity.
Hembadoon Orsar, Chairman of CAMPAN, highlighted the critical role the media plays in shaping perception and understanding the world around them. He emphasized the importance of promoting a culture of peace, unity, and love through responsible media practices.
