The Cross River State chapter of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) on Tuesday protested against economic hardship in the country around the state capital, Calabar.

The Labour leaders who were lead by its state chairman, Gregory Olayi protested around the city admist tight security.

There was high presence of security operatives in most of the major roundabouts in the city of Calabar to forestall break down of law and order in the state.

The State Chairman said they have decided to tell the leaders of the nation that they are not doing the right thing as Nigerians are dying of hunger.

According to Olayi, “Nigerians cannot buy food and as much little fuel for their motorcycles, many Nigerians cannot afford.

“It is really a difficult time for Nigerians and we say no to the hardship in the nation,” he said.

The protest saw workers welding banners with inscriptions such a as “we demand a living wage;” “let the masses breathe;” “our take home pay must take us home; “we demand that our refineries work at full capacity.

The State Chapter of the Trade Union Congress stayed away from the protest in deference to the directive of its national body.
